Chapter 11

As Danica and I stepped into Maddie's cozy bookstore, a pang of unusual guilt washed over me. Lately, Marcel had become my constant shadow, his presence a comforting constant in my daily life. Yet today, as duty called me to work, I had left him behind at home. I often pondered how Doris, ever so accommodating, managed her patience with Marcel's relentless following. He wasn't a service animal, and the mere thought of a surprise health department visit sent shivers down my spine. It could spell trouble for Doris and her establishment.

Marcel's life was far from stressful or troubled. In my heart, I knew he was probably lounging on the couch, deeply asleep and snoring softly. Yet, with Gigi not around to keep him company, the thought of him being alone tugged at my heartstrings. Marcel had swiftly grown to be a source of immense comfort to me.

"Hello, ladies, great to see you today!" Maddie greeted us, busy with rearranging books on a shelf. She hadn't seen us come in, but somehow, she knew. It amazed me every time. Maddie was a witch who always knew what was happening around her, a rare skill even among witches. It seemed she had mastered this talent, probably because it was so useful in her bookstore.

"Hi, Maddie. We have some questions for you," Danica said.

Maddie nodded. "I'll be with you in one moment." She held up a finger.

Danica's face lit up with a warm smile the moment Maddie's gaze fell on us. Her eyes held a tender softness when they met mine. "Don't worry, we'll find a way through this," she reassured with gentle conviction. "Be ready to use some magic, though. It seems unavoidable in this case. I wish I could take this burden off your shoulders, but this is the path you're destined for, and you're not meant to walk it alone."

I felt really nervous about what we had to do, but I couldn't back out. Luckily, Danica came to the café and said she'd help me. This mystery was scary, and I wasn't sure I could handle it alone. It was good to have someone else there to help. It also made me feel better about working with stronger witches. I kept telling myself that if I made a mistake they were there to help fix it.

"I know," I whispered, clenching my fists at my sides. "I'm readying myself."

Danica nodded and smiled, then walked over to Maddie, who was stepping down from a step stool. I quickly followed. When Maddie came closer and saw my face, she looked worried and her brow wrinkled in a frown.

"Maddie, I hate to interrupt, but it seems you're already aware of the dire situation I'm facing. Someone has stolen Gigi's bones, and time is slipping through our fingers--especially for Gigi. I desperately need your help," I implored.

"Oh, Arabella, of course. What do you need?" Maddie's calm nature wrapped around me as she reached out and touched my forearm. It was like a calm energy jumped from her to me and enabled me to focus a little more clearly.
